The Foundation has come together in the last few months as we have filed our corporate papers, adopted an official mission statement, received our charitable tax-exempt status from the IRS, created our 2009 Awards plan, and expanded the JT3 Art Board of Directors.

The new official mission statement for the Foundation:
The Jesse Thompkins III Foundation for Young People in the Arts (JT3 Art) invests in the development of emerging artists who best embody our namesake’s tenacity in the pursuit of their artistic passion.

Suzanne Callahan of Callahan Consulting for the Arts, LLC evaluated our 2009 Awards plan which includes the details for the JT3 Artist Awards.

Our Form 1023 application for tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code has been completed. Our application was reviewed by attorneys from two separate law firms prior to being sent to the IRS. The following attorneys reviewed our application:

  • Robyn Guilliams, Esq., of the non-profit arts law firm Fettman, Tolchin & Majors, PC, who is under retainer with the Foundation
  • Tarnetta Jones, Esq., Associate Attorney at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP, a volunteer on the Foundation's Start Up Advisory Group, and a friend of Jesse’s.

We received notice from the IRS on May 15th, 2009 that our application for public charity, tax-exempt status was approved. The tax-exempt status for the Foundation is retroactive to September 5, 2008.

We have established a virtual office with Intelligent Office DC, at 1425 K Street, NW, Suite 350, Washington, DC 20005. The Foundation telephone number is 202-587-2727.

We have expanded our initial board by adding choreographer Dianne McIntyre, and film/tv professional Karla Nappi. This rounds out our board to five members total.
